One of the many student societies of the University of Nottingham Students' Union, the Nottingham Debating Union exists to provide a platform for debating within the University. It plays host to weekly public debates, both Inter-varsity and internal Debating competitions as well as offering training and competitive opportunities for its members. Public Debates The Debating Union hosts public debates every Monday Evening. Past debates have included calls to give all animals, including humans, equal rights and to adopt democratic marxism in the face of the global economic crisis. Competitive Debating Members of the Union regularly attend Inter-varsity competitions held as part of the IONA Debating Circuit. Despite only becoming a regular feature on the circuit since 2005, Nottingham has quickly acquired a reputation for fielding high quality debaters - since the creation of the European Debating Rankings for the 06/07 season, the Union has climbed from 64th (06/07) to its current ranking of 4th (08/09), . Nottingham teams have also attended both the European and World Universities Debating Championships. At WUDC Cork 2009 Nottingham A (Torrance & Jackson) reached the quarter-finals - one of only two non-oxbridge UK institutions to do so (the other being Manchester). Debating Competitions The Debating Union hosts the Nottingham Open (an Inter-varsity competition) and the Hallward Cup (open to all Nottingham University students). There are plans to host a Schools competition in the 2009/2010 academic year.
