North East Chinese Basketball League

The North East Chinese Basketball League was formed on August 8, 2008 with sponsorship from the non-profit organization GAPS Foundation. It features Chinese American players in the North East United States. History At about the same time Chinese students were immigrating in large numbers to the United States during the late 1980s, basketball was becoming an international sporting attraction. Players such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone were not only American basketball idols, but were also supported in China. Starting in 1999, Chinese stars like Wang ZhiZhi and Mengke Bateer entered the scenes of the National Basketball Association and immediately caused a surge of interest among Chinese fans. In 2002, Yao Ming became the #1 Draft and successfully competed in the challenging NBA. Since his arrival, he has continued to inspire Chinese in China, Chinese in the US, Americans and fans throughout the world. After Yao's retirement in 2011, Harvard standout Jeremy Lin rose to prominence during February 2012. His seven-game winning streak and excellent play for the New York Knicks made him a global icon overnight and continue to impact Chinese Americans and Asians across the globe. Formation Additionally, in 2007, another Chinese star - Yi Jian Lian - entered the scene and had an outstanding season. On 8 August 2008, as China and global citizens are participating the start of the Beijing XXIX Olympic Games, Chinese people celebrated in the United States by publicly announcing 8/8/08 as "Official North-East Chinese Basketball League Formation Date." on April 11, 2009 and composed of Temple University CSSA, George Washington University, Towson University CSSA, Johns Hopkins University CSSA (Best Cheerleading Team), Lehigh University (Bronze), South New Jersey (Silver), and University of Pennsylvania (MVP Lu Chao) (Gold). received the Gold Medal, Stevens Institute of Technology received the Silver Medal, and Syracuse University received the Bronze Medal. The 2012 Tournament was held at Towson University on April 14, 2012. Special thanks to Towson CSSA, Tao Jun, Li Junjie, Ying Zheng, Meng Gao, Du Ke ( Stevens), Hong Xing (George Washington), and Dong Dong (University of Maryland) for their contributions. This year's participating teams include the following: Towson University (HOST), Robert H. Smith School of Business, Virginia Supernova, George Washington University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Delaware, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Temple University, University of Rochester, Johns Hopkins University, Syracuse University, Stevens Institute, Penn State University, University of Maryland College Park, SUNY Binghamton, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Lehigh University, Drexel University, West Virginia University & University of Pittsburgh. The 2012 tournament had the most number of teams in history and coincides with the 5 Year Anniversary mark. Special thanks to Great Oaks Venture Capital and Frontier LLC for their support. Part of this year's donated monies will be directed to the China Youth Development Foundation. Virginia Supernova received the Gold Medal, Syracuse University received the Silver Medal, Stevens Institute of Technology received the Bronze Medal, and the University of Delaware received the Spirit Cup. The 2013 Tournament was held at C3 Community Center in State College, PA on April 12 and 13. Special thanks to Spring Yang (PSU), Stephanie Liu (PSU), Wei Guo (UChicago), Peter Ran (Wharton), Jun Tao (Towson), Dong Dong (UMCP), and Xuan Wang (SUNY Buffalo) for their contributions. This year's participating teams include the following: University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, Stevens Institute, Miami University, Purdue University, Ohio State University, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, SUNY Buffalo, George Washington University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Delaware, Temple University, Drexel University, SUNY Binghamton, University of Chicago, Lehigh University, Rutgers University, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Maryland & Rochester. All of this year's donated monies will be given to Ms. Yifan Gu, the Ohio State University student who was critically injured in a bicycle accident. Purdue University received the Gold Medal, Ohio State University received the Silver Medal, Penn State University received the Bronze Medal. The 2014 Tournament will be held in Sandy Spring, MD and Fairfax, VA on April 11 and 12. Special thanks to the George Washington University Chinese Cultural Association for hosting this as well as the following volunteers: Leo Shen (UMCP), Jun Tao (Towson), Dong Dong (Columbia), Zack Zhang (UPenn), Zhuo Yan (Indiana) for their contributions. For 2014, there was a record-breaking 28 teams participating.
