NFC South Curse

The NFC South Curse refers to an observed pattern where the NFC South winner has not repeated since the 2002 realignment. The pattern also holds that the last place team comes in first the following year.
In 2003 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Superbowl, but failed to make the playoffs the next two years, the first time in NFL history this happened.
The last to first trend began after the 2002 season:
* Carolina Panthers finished last in 2002, and first in 2003
* Atlanta Falcons finished last in 2003, and first in 2004
* Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished last in 2004, and first in 2005
* New Orleans Saints finished last in 2005, and first in 2006
* Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished last in 2006, first in 2007
In the last game of the 2008 season, a last-second field goal by Carolina (12-4) led to victory over the New Orleans Saints, and the division title, which prevented Atlanta at 11-5 (who had finished last in 2007), from continuing the "last-to-first" streak. This broke the worst-to-first pattern, although the previous year's last place team, the Atlanta Falcons, did make the playoffs.
