Medieval history of Nedumkallel family
Nedumkallel family is originated from a place known as Mulanthuruthy in Kerala.Mulanthuruthy was one of the major trade spot of the ancient Kerala.Romans and Syrians had trade relationship with Mulanthuruthy in the 12th century.Among them, few Syrians permenantly settled in Mulamthuruthi and continued their business with the west from there. Most of them came from a place known as 'Palasna' in the ancient Syria. They were Christians in majority. Later their family was known as 'Palasna' family in Mulamthuruthy. It is written in the Mulamthuruthy church history that 'Nedumkallel' family is bifurcated from 'Palasna' family in the 15 th century.'Palasna' families were popular in the kingdom of Cochin for their business skills and martial arts.'Palasna' family was recognised as 'Tharakanmar' and the then head of the 'Palasna' family was bestowed as 'Naduvazhi' by the Raja of Cochin in 15th century. When there was a riot broke out in Kerala in the 15 th century between Christians and Hindus, there were blood sheds happened in 'Palasna' family as well. This incident happened to be one of the reason for the bifurcation of 'Palasna' family into Palathinkal and Nedumkallel. The two families migrated to north eastern part of the ancient Cochin Kingdom. Forefather of Nedumkallel family moved to a place known as Arakuzha and later in few years that family again moved to another place known as Aavoli for finding better fertile lands. These two places are in Ernakulam district now.Over the period of time, his ancestors moved to different parts of the state and carry 'Nedumkallel' as their family name. The history of this family throws light into the transition of traditional traders into agriculturists over the period of time.
