Near East University Herbarium

Near East University Herbarium (NEUN) is an Herbarium located in Near East University, Nicosia, Cyprus. The Herbarium, founded in 13 December 2006 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salih Gucel. He is the Current Curator of NEUN. Herbarium continue to expand its collections and currently there is a research about bryophytes which will create a section about this group.
Near East University Herbarium have collections of phanerogams (flowering plants), mushrooms, and algaes. As a result of studies carried out so far, over 6500 flora samples and endemic plant species, 106 mushrooms gathered from the natural environment of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are available in the collection of the Herbarium Center. NEUN Herbaria database was established in 2008 to serve as a backup and easy access to information of vascular plant specimens that are housed in herbaria.
History
The center was opened as a part of the project called ‘Inventory of Regions of Botanically Important Flora’, through the contributions of Embassy of Turkey, Division of Environmental Protection and Natural Sources, which is a part of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Sources, Ministry of Economy and Tourism and NEU Institute of Earth, Sea, Atmosphere and Environmental Sciences. The center obtained its international code in July 2007 and since then has been developing its content and expanding its studies both in Cyprus and in overseas countries.
Access
The Herbarium is open to any visitor, professional or amateur, with a legitimate reason to consult the collections.
