Nanologica is a materials development company founded in August 2004 by Alfonso Garcia-Bennett, Krim Talia, Saeid Esmaeilzadeh and Ashkan Pouya as a spin off from the Structural Chemistry Division at Stockholm University, where Dr. Garcia-Bennett was a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Professor Osamu Terasaki. The company was founded on a novel method for the synthesis of mesoporous silica and metal oxide particles that could be applied in a variety of fields. They now specialize in developing novel mesoporous silica and porous aluminas for a variety of applications, these include Cosmetics, Adsorption, Separation, Catalysis, Drug Delivery, Food Science and Diagnostics. They are the world’s leading developers and producers of mesoporous silica particles (known as Nlab-Silica) which have shown commercial potential in the pharmaceutical industry as novel vehicles for the controlled release and targeted delivery of active pharmaceutical compounds with pharmacokinetic, bioavailability, formulation and solubility problems. Nanologica's technology allows control over the pore structure, surface functionalization and the composition of these materials. By controlling the porosity of mesoporous silica, Nanologica offer a delivery vehicle for the sustained release of the loaded molecules, which can be active substances in the food industry (for example flavours and aromas) cosmetic industry (for example vitamins) and pharmaceutical industry (for example anticancer agents, SiRNA, differentiation factors). Nanologica spun out two daughter companies, as part of its business model for growth, NLAB Solar (founded in Stockholm in 2009) and NLAB Bioscience (founded in Madrid in 2009) to commercialize the application of its nanoporous material based technology in two different sectors: Energy and Pharmaceutical drug delivery. They also launched NLAB Materials, which is an online store for the commercialization of novel nanoporous materials. Nanologica develops applications in the field of porous materials from its own pool of patents, generated in house, as well as those licenced in trhough collaborations and partnerships. Nanologica is a strong believer in forming close collaborations with academic institutions: of notable impact within the company has been the partneship with the research group of Dr. Hernan Miguez from the Institute of Materials Science of Seville working on macroporous photonic crystals. Of the original founders, only Krim Talia and Alfonso Garcia-Bennett remain owners and active members of the company; as CEO and Head of Research and Development respectively. Dr. Alfonso Garcia-Bennett holds an Assistant Professor position at Uppsala University in the Division Nanotechnology and Functional Materials, where he leads an active research team on fundamental and applied aspects of mesoporous silica.
