Nancy Waters

Nancy Waters (born 1942) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. A Democrat, she was elected as the county clerk for Muskegon County in 2008, and took office on January 1, 2009. Waters first ran for county clerk in 1976, narrowly losing to Margaret Greenwood. She also served as a Muskegon County Commissioner from 2003 to 2007, before declining to seek another term.
Waters, alongside Barbara Byrum of Ingham County, Lisa Brown of Oakland County, and Lawrence Kestenbaum of Washtenaw County, opened her office on March 22, 2014, to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the wake of the federal district court ruling in DeBoer v. Snyder. The ruling was temporarily stayed that same day, and the counties stopped licensing same-sex marriages.
