History
MODG began with Laura Berquist, author of the book Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum. After spending a decade of teaching her own children at home, Berquist wrote the book in order to help her fellow homeschooling mothers. After receiving positive response on the book, she founded MODG n 1995 in order to provide distance education and homeschooling counseling services. While MODG is a Catholic organization, it is open to students of all faiths and allows for religious texts to be substituted.
The teaching style recommended by the school is based on a classical method of learning. They allow parent-teachers to substitute different subjects, textbooks, and teaching methods under the guidance of a consultant so as to best suit the family and the student. The school provides services for all students ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade. These services include curriculum and reading material suggestions, teacher assistants (provided by a long distance tutor), group classes (online or via conference call) and consultation. The consultants guides the teacher on how to best educate the student, and also assess the child’s schooling throughout the school year by reviewing critical assignments and discussing progress with the parent, with up to several phone conferences held over the year as well as e-mail contact.
MODG is a BBB accredited school. Upon graduation, students receive a transcript and diploma from the school offices in Ojai, which are of equal value to those from public or private institutions. and MODG graduates can be accepted into any university.
Reception
Mother of Divine Grace has received positive responses from various sources. Catholic mom and blogger Dorian Speed praises MODG, and hails its teaching philosophy as a “perfect fit” for her children. Homeschoolchristian.com recommends the curriculum, and appreciates how it is adaptable to multiple religious denominations, not just Catholics. Internationally recognized, MODG has risen to esteem in education circles. Laura Berquist was called upon to endorse homeschooling for Primaryeducators.com, a website that fights for the rights of the homeschooling community in Austria. She writes: “I fully support the right of all parents to direct the education of their own children, and I specifically support the right of these families to do so.”
