Morevna Project is an open-source project to create an "anime-style" animated film based on the Russian folk tale of "Marya Morevna", adapted to a cyberpunk near future science fiction setting. A major goal of the project is to serve as an Open Movie to spur development on open source applications, especially the 2D computer animation and inbetweening application, Synfig Studio, which will be used for principle animation, along with Blender. Thus it serves much the same role for Synfig as the Blender Foundation's "Open Projects" (Elephants Dream (2006), Big Buck Bunny (2008) and Sintel (2010)) served for Blender. Unlike the Blender projects, Morevna Project is completely independent and has no foundation backing, being developed in much the same way as many open source software projects with volunteer contributions sought through the project's website.
