Miles Routledge, also known as Lord Miles He began planning a trip to Afghanistan in March 2021; in August, he travelled to Kabul, on the basis that the ongoing Taliban offensive would not take the city for at least another month. At the time, the <abbr>FCDO</abbr> advised against all travel to the whole country, and urged British nationals in Afghanistan to leave immediately. Several days later, the city was taken by Taliban forces, and Routledge described himself as being "stuck in a pickle"<ref name="layster" />; Routledge's posting about the experience on 4chan, Facebook and Twitch gained wide currency. He became known by the nickname "Lord Miles" after he posted about a £15 "lordship certificate" he had obtained online, saying "The Taliban may see that as reason enough to keep me alive, thinking it may hold some negotiating power as they'll think I'm important". He credited 4chan with having saved his life, after fellow posters began to research Taliban activity in the area and provide him with updates on their progress. Routledge said to journalists that he wanted the trip to be "a little charity thing". By August 15, Routledge said that the British embassy in Kabul had not responded to his calls or emails, and that he was "fully prepared for death", saying that the trip was a "test of God";<ref name"times" /> by that time, he had found refuge in a United Nations safehouse.<ref name"layster" />
