The book explores the concept of freedom of the press in the context of today's technological systems. Ananny reframes freedom of the press in terms of the public right to hear rather than an individual journalist's right to publish, and investigates ways societal, political, and technological infrastructure can be established to maintain that right. In addition to writing, Ananny has worked as a designer in new media technology, and has acted as a consultant to LEGO, Mattel and Nortel Networks. Some of his designs includes digital toys for children's language acquisition as well as interactive public art installations in Dublin, Northern Ireland and Amsterdam that make use of SMS text messaging.
