MigreLief

MigreLief (also known as MigreLieve, formerly Migra-Lieve and Migra-Health), is an over the counter all natural dietary supplement used by patients who suffer from chronic migraine headaches.
It is prescribed to adults and children 2 years of age and older, with the intent to prevent or reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine headache attacks. It is used in conjunction with migraine prescription medications or by itself.
Approval and availability
The original formula, is available without prescription in the United States and internationally. MigreLief was first available in 1997 manufactured and marketed by Akeso Health Sciences, L.L.C. It is the first comprehensive supplement for the support of cerebrovascular tone. The science behind the combination of natural compounds found in MigreLief was awarded 2 United States patents (#6068999, #6500450). The original research was performed by MigreLief inventor Curt Hendrix, M.S., C.C.N., C.N.S.
Clinical assessment of efficacy
The ingredients found in MigreLief; Feverfew, Riboflavin & Magnesium, are listed in the American Academy of Neurology's guidelines for migraine headache prevention. These scientifically sound evidence-based guidelines for migraine headache management and prevention were developed and documented by members of The U.S. Headache Consortium (American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Neurology, American Headache Society, American College of Emergency Physicians, American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine, American Osteopathic Association and National Headache Foundation).
Mechanism of action
MigreLief is often referred to as the "Triple Therapy™ approach" to migraine prevention due to the 3 active ingredients which have been shown to be: anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet aggregation agents, reduce vasospasms, and correct mitochondrial energy deficiencies, all of which are thought to be helpful in preventing migraine episodes.
Ingredients
Two tablets provide:
* Puracol Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) 100 mg.
* Magnesium (Citrate/Oxide) 360 mg
* Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) 400 mg
Contains no yeast, milk, corn, wheat, gluten, soy sodium, salt, sugar, flavorings, preservatives, artificial colors.
Magnesium is a nutritional supplement with numerous effects that support cerebrovascular tone. Other benefits include; inhibition of vasospasm, inhibition of platelet aggregation, direct alterations of cerebrovascular tone, interference of synthesis, release and action of inflammatory mediators and stabilization of cell membranes. Research studies show that almost half of all migraine sufferers have low blood levels of magnesium which is critical in controlling vasospasms (the contraction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which occurs during migraines).

Riboflavin is involved in energy production in every cell. A deficiency of cellular energy has been observed in some persons with migraines, and Riboflavin can help correct that deficiency. Studies suggest when used over a three month period, it has dramatic benefits. Riboflavin is a precursor of flavin adenine dinucleotide(FAD). This coenzyme is an important component of the electron-transport chain. A deficiency of mitochondrial energy reserves has been observed in some persons exhibiting poor cerebrovascular tone. This defect may theoretically be corrected by a compound such as riboflavin that improves the activity of the electron-transport chain.
Puracol - Feverfew
(Tanacetum parthenium) is an herb that studies have shown to be beneficial for long-term cerebrovascular tone. Puracol is a proprietary form of whole-leaf feverfew and feverfew extract. It is rich in compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones. The most important compound may be parthenolide which represents 85% of the sesquiterpene lactone content in feverfew. Scientific studies have found parthenolide inhibit platelet aggregation and the release of serotonin from platelets and polymorphonuclear leukocyte granules. It has also been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory prostaglandin synthesis and the release of arachadonic acid. Each of these phenomena are associated with migraines. While extracts of Feverfew can maximize certain phytochemicals found in the plant, like parthenolides, the extraction process can also remove other naturally occurring phytochemicals that may be required for maximum efficacy. The puracol technology corrects this problem by simultaneously maximizing parthenolide levels while maintaining the full spectrum of all the other naturally occurring compounds found in the whole plant.
Usage
MigreLief Original Formula is administered in tablet form and taken daily. Migraine headache patients use it by itself or combined with other prescriptions medications. For migraine prevention the manufacturer suggests new users take the product continuously for 3 months to reach maximum efficacy allowing the body to achieve therapeutic levels of all the active compounds. However efficacy has been noted in as little as one week for some users.
Side-effects, contraindications, adverse reactions or interactions
Side effects due to any of the ingredients in MigreLief are rare. Mild gastrointestinal upset and loose stools may occur in some persons using magnesium. This product is not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation and should not be used in children under the age of two years. Persons taking potassium-sparing diuretics or with renal failure should not use this product. MigreLief can be combined with other migraine prescription medications.

MigreLief's primary advertising approach is to emphasize the importance of prevention, addressing the underlying deficiencies that lead to migraines as opposed to treating the symptoms once they occur. Their first slogan was "Prevent Migraines Before They Start!" Presently MigreLief uses the slogan, "Don't just treat the pain...get your life back!" The majority of MigreLief's advertising campaigns however, focus on the fact that neurologists and leading headache clinics have recommended MigreLief due to the popularity it has gained among the medical community as an all-natural alternative treatment for migraine headache prevention.
