Michael Flanagan (tennis)

Michael Flanagan (born June 26, 1972) is a former professional tennis player who now works in finance.
Early life
Flanagan (born 1972) was raised in Dallas, where he attended the St. Mark’s School of Texas. Flanagan was ranked as the top singles player in his age group in the state of Texas as a 12 year old. As recounted in Michael Chang's autobiographical book, Holding Serve: Persevering On and Off the Court, Chang's victory over Flanagan in the hardcourt singles finals in the Boys 12 division was not only Chang's first national championship but also a springboard to significantly more access to training and tournaments. Michael Joyce defeated Flanagan in the hardcourt singles finals of the Boys 18's, a national championship that apparently led Joyce to conclude he should bypass college and go straight to professional tennis.
During Flanagan's senior year of high school, he and his teammate, Ivan Baron, won the 1990 USTA national doubles champion for boys 18 years old or younger. He and Baron then competed in the men's doubles at the US Open, losing in the first round.
College Tennis
Flanagan attended Stanford University, initially without a sports scholarship. During his four years playing tennis at Stanford, Flanagan was twice named an All American and was named, three straight years, to the Pac 10 All Academic team. In 1992, he was part of the Stanford men’s NCAA Division I championship tennis team. In 1993, Flanagan and Chris Cocotos reached the finals of the NCAA Division I doubles championship before losing to the team of David Blair and Mark Merklein. Flanagan played #1 singles and doubles as a Stanford senior.
Flanagan graduated from Stanford in 1994.
Professional careers
Following his graduation from college, Flanagan played singles and doubles on tennis’s ATP Tour for two years.
Flanagan worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs between 1996 and 1999 and then received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2002. Since graduation from business school, Flanagan has worked in finance.
Personal
Flanagan is married and has two children. They live in Dallas, Texas.
