Michael Abrams

Mike Abrams (born July 16, 1953) is an American psychologist and co-author with Albert Ellis of several works on Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. He was instrumental in the formalisation of Ellis' model of personality while coauthoring Ellis' only college textbook . Abrams worked closely with Ellis during his later years when he added an evolutionary psychology perspective to his personality theory.
In 2007 Abrams set forth a developmental theory of paraphilias and sexual disorders which proposed that men require only a mild trauma during a key developmental period when sexual arousal cues are developed. He further proposed that women require far stronger traumatic events to develop paraphilias. This theory will be set forth in an expanded form in his latest book: Sexuality: Development, Differences, and Disorders.
Abrams also published several articles supporting the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). One of these proposed that any measured efficacy of psychodynamic therapy is actually a result of these practitioners effectively performing CBT.
Abrams has received numerous awards and commendations for his clinical work in U.S. inner city areas. His contributions were recently chronicled in the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies
