Metropolis (organization)

World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis) is a non-profit and non-governmental international organisation that brings together the governments of more than 130 urban agglomerations worldwide .
Founded in 1985, its mission is to give a voice to local and regional governments in national and global politics to support the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals and make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable . Metropolis aims to be the focal point of worldwide expertise on metropolitan governance.
History
Metropolis was driven in 1984 by Michel Giraud, then President of the Regional Council of Ile-de-France, who convened the first Congress Metropolis'84. The constituent meeting of the Association was held in Montreal in April 1985 and was attended by 14 founding members: Abidjan, Addis Ababa, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Colombo, Ile-de-France, London, Los Angeles, Mexico, Montreal, New York, Tokyo and Turin.
Presidencies
1985-1998: Michel Giraud, former President of Regional Council of Île de France.
1998-2006: Joan Clos, former Mayor of Barcelona .
2006-2015: Jean-Paul Huchon, former President of Regional Council of Île de France.
2015-2017: Denis Coderre. Former Mayor of Montréal.
Current president: Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of Berlin.
