Mephisto Award

The is a literary award given by the Kodansha Mephisto Literary Magazine for exceptional rookie mystery or detective writers within the magazine.
General Information
The award started in 1996, the same year that Mephisto went into publication by Kodansha. While the award itself does not include a monetary bonus outright, the nominated pieces of work usually get hardcover releases by Kodansha, to which the authors receive royalties off of. The winners also receive a small statue in the shape of Sherlock Holmes.
With regards to their sales pitch of "Ultimate Entertainment", the magazine follows an "anything goes" approach and bring in young authors whose detective/mystery stories fall outside the normal conventions in their genres. Winners of the Mephisto Award are especially exceptional writers, as the award makes for a particularly impressive debut, such as Nisio Isin's win in 2002 with the Zaregoto series .
