Plot summary

Veil, a girl living with her extended family in an area called the Red Hills, is sold by her father to a passing slave caravan. While passing through the desert, the entire caravan is slaughtered by a lone swordsman. Veil, who passes out during the attack, is hidden by a body and thus survives. She awakes, picks up money, and takes off after the swordsman, figuring he is a better option than the open desert.

Veil meets the mercenary, named Corvus, and follows him through the desert to a city. There, they meet a deadly, if somewhat unstable, knife-fighter named Isobel and her partner. They venture out to meet Isobel's leader, the Lord Adrian, who is leading a resistance against the Khaevs who invaded the Empire before the book.

Meanwhile, a pair of Khaev draekers (miniature dragon riders)named Kei and Kit are assigned to a noblewoman's quest. They are assisted by a shadow spirit, Jyo-Raku, who seems to have a hidden agenda.

The myriad characters' storylines finally coalesce at Godsdoom, the tomb built by the gods when they were defeated by the spirts six thousand years ago.
