Melanie Morningstar is an Australian journalist and filmmaker. As a producer for 60 Minutes Australia, Morningstar spent four months in Honduras in 1997, tracking down Australia’s "Most Wanted Criminal", Robert “Dolly” Dunn. She trekked by herself from large and small towns in Honduras, including the Bay Islands and into Guatemala. She found a contact, set up a sting operation; the Australian Federal Police arrived and, with the help of the CIA, was able to have him arrested when Dunn arrived in Miami. The Sydney Morning Herald called it "the greatest scoop in Australian journalism in decades". As the California Business reporter for the London Evening Standard, she covered the business of California, not only Hollywood, but Aerospace, Silicon Valley, Vineyards etc. as well. Morningstar is a Masters graduate of Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). One of her short films, “Father” was an official selection in 24 international film festivals, winning four. Another, “Loved” was chosen to screen at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. Her films have been Official Selections at the following film festivals: Cannes FF 2019 (Australian Showcase), White Nights FF (Russia) (Winner, Best Student Film), Worldfest-Houston (Winner, Best Short Film), Melbourne Short FF (Winner), Lerapetra FF (Greece), Indifest FF, (San Francisco), International Short FF (London), Key West FF (Florida), Kinsale Shark (Ireland), LA Short Award (USA), Portland FF (USA), Santa Cruz FF (Argentina), Sioux City FF (USA), Accolade Film Festival (USA), San Tropez FF (France), Down Under Berlin FF (Germany), Newport FF (USA), Australian Short Film Today, (International),Brooklyn Women’s FF (USA), Key West FF (Florida), Kinsale Shark (Ireland). No longer a news journalist, Morningstar has turned her focus to narrative; producing three short films. She is producing a storyworld - a short film, six-part television (streaming) series, a feature film, an AR app and a 3D immersive experience.
