Mel Kositsky (born 1951) During the political campaign for the , Kositsky was one of five of the 's councillors to receive a $500 donation from the Langley Firefighters' Union. In June 2011, he brought forward a motion to make permanent the closure of Zero Avenue and 200th Street in South Langley. On September 11, he announced that he would run for mayor that year. On the 30th, he was elected to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities' board of directors. He was one of two politicians in the Lower Mainland to be elected to the board that week, the other being Burnaby's Sav Dhaliwal. Two months later, there was a political debate between the mayoral candidates for both Langley City and Langley Township. As he was one of the candidates, Kositsky participated in this debate. Tara Teng, who was Miss Canada at the time, asked Kositsky what his passion was, and he responded by declaring his passion to be "helping others achieve their goals." Yorkson Group's Hank Der asked why Kositsky had missed a vote about the development of Athenry, and Kositsky said that he had been visiting a longtime friend in the hospital who died three days later. Kositsky spent $70,254 on his political campaign, but he lost the election to Jack Froese who had spent $79,533. Kositsky received 6,522 votes, but Froese received 7,706.
