Mayamma

Mayamma is the stage name of Alex Mathew (Born 12th Oct, 1988), an Indian entertainer and drag queen from Kuttanad of Kerala, India. She is a well known personality in Bangalore and continues to perform in various spaces in and around Bangalore.
Alex created a drag character known as Mayamma, a Malayali drag queen and first of her kind from Kerala. Mayamma’s persona is being carefully crafted to be sophisticated and positive so that Mayamma carries a message of love for oneself. Through the act, Mayamma hopes to raise awareness for individualism, gender equality and feminism, all of which are charged topics in a generally conservative country that has made international news for many manifestations of patriarchy. Though considered as a popular art form in some countries, drag queens are yet to enter the cultural mainstream in India.
Alex is a content writer at a corporate firm and has an MBA. He prefers to be a man during the day, and doesn't cross dress outside of performances or preparations. He believes that gender and sexuality should be a fluid concept and identifies as queer.
