He was the first-round draft pick (second pick overall) by the Scio Woodpeckers of the WVMBL in April of 2008.
Lyon is listed as 6' 2" tall at 175 lbs, and wears 8 as a jersey number. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed, although he has attempted switch-hitting on various occasions.
High school
Lyon graduated from Philomath High School of Philomath, Oregon in 2006 and attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He was a recipiant of the Ford Family Foundation scholarship award and the Pioneer All-American Athlete scholarship, which together provided an almost full ride to the University. Lyon is currently attending the University of Oregon in the persuit of a Master of Architecture.
College
Lyon led the Woodpeckers in stolen bases in both 2008 with 12 in 15 games and 2009 with 14 in 19 games each season, and batted a team's second-best average of .356 in 2009. He was drafted as a center fielder, but due to position conflicts with other players, Lyon was moved primarily to left field early in the 2008 season.
In 2009 alone Lyon finished the 19-game season with a .356 batting average, .442 OBP, .644 slugging percentage, and 14 stolen bases, which accounted over half of the Woodpeckers stolen bases overall.. He currently stands with a .323 career batting average.
Lyon has also been used as a right fielder, third baseman, first baseman, and designated hitter, but has primarily started in left field.
Within a week of being drafted, Lyon began struggling with various injuries, beginning with a strain in his left quadricep after bunting for a base hit on Opening Day. During an interleague matchup mid-season, Lyon suffered severe burns on his forearms after diving head-first into second base in a successful stolen base attempt. Finally, after a strenuous season for his throwing abilities, Lyon tore his right rotator cuff while throwing to home plate from left field in a playoff game in August of 2008. After undergoing physical therapy at the University of Oregon, the sports physiology department suggested surgery for the injured shoulder, but Lyon refused. By the 2009 season, his rotator cuff had almost completely healed and Lyon stayed healthy through the 2009 season.
After the 2009 season, Lyon announced his free agency and intention to relocate, due to lack of team chemistry. There have been trade rumors involving an acquisition of Lyon by the Sheldon Nationals of the Eugene Mens Senior Baseball League, as well the Monmouth Rookies of the WVMBL who have been looking to bolster their speed and offensive contact strategy, but Lyon has not finalized plans for the 2010 season yet.
