Matthias Wittenburg

Matthias Wittenburg (born 5 June 1968 in Lüneburg) is a German entrepreneur and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Up until 2016, he was on the board of HSH Nordbank, which changed its name to Hamburg Commercial Bank in February 2019. He is particularly known for his public engagement in the field of business ethics.
Life and education
After graduating from the Wilhelm Raabe School in Lüneburg in 1987, Wittenburg initially enlisted as a regular soldier in the Army Medical Service with the German Armed Forces. He is a reserve officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
From 1991 to 1993 he trained as a banker at Dresdner Bank AG in Hamburg. He completed his extra-occupational banking studies at the Distance Learning University in Hagen and Cardiff University in Wales in 1990-1992 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). His Master's thesis was on the topic of finance leasing. In 2010, he completed the Advanced Management Leadership and Management Programme (OALMP) at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
Wittenburg has been married to Sabine Wittenburg since 1996. He has two sons from this marriage, born in 1998 and 1999. The family lives in Radbruch in the district of Lüneburg.
Professional career
After completing his training as a banker, Wittenburg joined Dresdner Bank AG in Frankfurt am Main in 1993 as a syndicate manager. From 1996 to 1999 he worked for Lehman Brothers Bankhaus AG in Frankfurt am Main and London. In 1999 he moved to Dresdner Bank AG's investment banking brand, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, as Head of Bond Syndication, where he became Managing Director in 2002. From 2007, he was global head of several industrial sectors at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt, and in 2009 he rose to the position of divisional board member for Corporates & Markets Client Relationship Management. In 2011, he participated in the 129th Baden-Badener Unternehmer Gespräch as part of this position.
In 2013, Matthias Wittenburg moved to HSH Nordbank AG in Hamburg as a member of the Management Board. There he was responsible for the Corporates & Markets department until 2016.
Enterpreneurial activity
After stepping down from the board he founded Wittenburg Corporate Finance e. K. in Radbruch in March 2017, which he has been running as owner ever since. The company's focus is on advising medium-sized companies in the areas of company sales and financing.
In February 2019, he was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Committees
Since October 2015, spokesman for the Arbeitskreis Evangelischer Unternehmer (AEU) of the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein regional group, of which he was vice-chairman from 2011 to 2015.
Since 2013 honorary knight in the Order of St John.
Since 2013 member of the Economic Advisory Board of the Hamburg Bishop.
Since 2015 member of the board of trustees at the Übersee-Club e.V. in Hamburg.
From 2014 to 2016, member of the General Assembly of the Kiel Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
From 2010 to 2016, member of the International Advisory Board of the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
