Matt McIlwain

Matt McIlwain is an American businessman, managing partner and director of the venture capital firm Madrona Venture Group.
Early Life
McIlwain was educated at Dartmouth where he received a B.A. in Government and Economics in 1987. He later went on to receive a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School in 1992.
Career
Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was Vice President of Business Process for the Genuine Parts Company. He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing in technology-driven sectors and prior to that worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse.
In addition to his work at Madrona, McIlwain is chair of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center board of trustees. He is also on the board for the Washington Policy Center, the Be Greater Foundation, and founded the non-profit Opportunity for All Coalition in 2017 to challenge a proposed Seattle income tax in court. He serves as a director on several boards, including Mixpo, Animoto, and Smartsheet and named to the list of top 100 Venture Capitalists by CB Insights and The New York Times. In 2011 he received the Washington Policy Center’s Champion of Freedom Award and in 2017 he received the Puget Sound’s Business Journal’s Emerging Company Director of the year award.
