Henney began his career with Workington Reds in the 1990s when the team were playing in the North West Counties League Division One. They won promotion in 1999 into the Northern Premier League First Division, but Henney had joined Gretna by 2001. He became notable at Gretna for scoring their first goal in Scottish football in 2002 after just 15 seconds into their match against Greenock Morton. Henney was regular with Gretna in the Scottish Division Three but chose not to turn professional, instead opting to move back to Workington early in the 2003-04 season and enjoying two successive promotions to the Conference North.
Henney remained with Workington until 2007, with his final season at the club being hampered by injury. He joined Cumbrian rivals Barrow AFC in for the 2007-08 season and gained a regular place on the right wing.
