Master of Science in Clinical Optometry by Salus University

Salus University was founded as Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in 1919. PCO was the first optometry college to award the Doctor of Optometry degree. In the early 1990s, PCO began offering the Master of Science in Optometry degree to international practitioners around the world. The purpose of this international program is to improve the standards of optometry in the country where it is delivered.
This program is delivered in a part-time format to allow practising optometrists the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills without taking a break from their optometry career. The duration of the Master of Science in Clinical Optometry is two years. Once a month for four days, Professors and Doctors of Optometry travel to the country of delivery to lecture on the topic of their expertise. Students undertake laboratory training classes in clinical diagnostic procedures to hone their skills in slit lamp funduscopy, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, applanation tonometry, and exophthalmometry.
Twice in the program, students are required to travel to Salus University to undergo patient care training for two weeks each. Patients who have been identified with various ocular diseases are paid to be examined by the visiting international students. Through this intense training, students are able to learn the detection and management of different ocular conditions within the duration that they are on-campus.
Singapore
In the early 2000s, Pennsylvania College of Optometry was invited by the Singapore Optometric Association to deliver the international program in Singapore. The introduction of this program was held in Singapore Polytechnic, and was supported by the then head of optometry, Dr Patricia Rose. As locally qualified optometrists hold the basic qualification of Diploma in Optometry awarded by Singapore Polytechnic, PCO includes an additional year of study and awards the Bachelor of Science in Optometry as a bridging program in addition to the Master of Science in Clinical Optometry degree. As such, the Bachelor of Science in Optometry / Master of Science in Clinical Optometry program in Singapore spans over three years.
