Massively multiplayer online role-playing game terms and acronyms
This is an alphabetical list of terms and abbreviations used in the context of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, or MMORPGs. These terms sometimes overlap with that of Dungeons & Dragons, and other games. Not listed are common Internet slang terms not unique to MMORPGs.
0-9 * 1 - typed by members of a party when they are ready to begin a mission * 1H - One-Handed weapon * 2H - Two-Handed weapon * 1HS/1HE - One-Handed Slash/Edged weapon (e.g., one-handed sword) * 2HS/2HE - Two-Handed Slash/Edged weapon (e.g., two-handed sword) * 1HB - One-Handed Blunt weapon * 2HB - Two-Handed Blunt weapon * 1HP - One-Handed Piercing weapon * 2HP - Two-Handed Piercing weapon * 1HPP / 1H+ - One Handed Poisoned weapon * 2HPP / 2H+ - Two Handed Poisoned weapon
A * AC *# - noun Armor class *# - noun auto-clicker, a program or method that allows a player to click or press a button quickly and repeatedly in rapid succession. Sometimes an external hack program, and sometimes a physical device. Some games have banned their use, since 'one-click' execution of a complicated series of button-presses is considered an 'exploit'. *# - verb To use such a method in game. Either to spam skills or actions, or gain an advantage during first-come-first-serve events (i.e., first person to click on a particular NPC gets to perform the quest or receive the item). *# - verb Anti Crash, used in the game RuneScape when two clans are fighting in the wilderness and another clan/clans interfere. At this point the two original clans will call for another/more clans to remove the gate-crashers (Normally referred as No Honour) so the two original clans can continue fighting without interference. * Admin - noun A administrator/staff of an online game. An admin helps players with game-related problems and resolve any in-game issues such as bugs or hacking. * Add - noun Additional monster(s) joining a fight when the players are already fighting. * Crit - noun Critical strike/hit. A hit that multiplies the damage of a typical strike. * Critter
U * Uber - A player or object that is considered superior. cf. uber guild: a guild composed of 'uber' players with 'uber' equipment. German for "over," and thus short for "overpowered;" however, "uber" usually does not carry the negative connotation of "overpowered" or "OP."
V * Vendor *# noun An NPC merchant that buys and sells items. Some have specific wares and may be referred to as such. Example: "Where can I find the armour vendor in this town?" *# verb To sell an item to an NPC vendor instead of to another player, usually because the item is vendor trash. Example: "Vendor the Raptor Eggs instead of auctioning them." * Vendor trash or Vendor fodder - noun Items that serve no purpose other than being sold to an NPC for money. Alternately shortened to simply "trash" or "trash loot." * Vent noun Short for "Ventrilo", a popular program that allows players to speak with each other audibly rather than via typing.
W * Warder A person who specialises in helping the team as whole or damaging the enemy team by creating wards. * Wards A spell that allows the player to create an area which helps the allied players in it by either giving HP regeneration, energy regeneration, speed bonuses and armour bonuses. It can also hinder the opposing players by decreasing their armour, giving them HP degeneration, energy degeneration, damage and making them slower. * Warp *# verb A spell or ability that allows a player to return to their home or bind point (see "Hearth"). *# verb A player or NPC suddenly disappearing from one place and reappearing in another, often from lag. The term bamf is occasionally used instead. * WC - Water Closet. Going to the bathroom. * Whore *# verb A derogatory term for the act of using only one or two powerful moves or spells to defeat opponents. Also when a person uses a cheap technique to obtain their goals or complete a task. Example: "All he does is whore fireball..!!" (see Spam). Example 2: "All he does is whore HK's all day so his honor will go up.." *# verb When a lower level player joins a higher level group for a high level quest or raid. * Wipe - noun When a party or group of player characters are all killed by enemies (wiped out). * WTB - verb Want to buy, when a player wants to buy a specific item from another player. * WTC - verb Want to craft, when a player wants to craft a specific item (looking for crafter). * WTS - verb Want to sell, when a player wants to sell a specific item to another player. * WT - Wrong Tell. Used when a player sends a message in the wrong channel. See also, MT. * WTT - verb Want to trade, when a player wants to trade a specific item for another one.
X * XO *# verb XO means 'exit out' or leave the area, As made popular by these MMORPG's World of Warcraft and Everquest, "quickly Xo." *# verb Means to log out out of a MMORPG, "go plz Xo to save your character." * XP - noun Short for "experience points", a common representation of character advancement in role-playing games. * XD - an emoticon representing a mischievous grin.
Z * Zerging - A tactic analogous to the human wave attack in real-world ground warfare, in which overwhelming numbers of troops are sent at the enemy, disregarding tactics or casualties. Generally looked down upon by skilled players, in some games artificial measures are taken to prevent this. In MMORPGs, players zerg by running into a battle without any particular battle tactics and overwhelming the opponent(s) by sheer force of numbers, rather than a set strategy. Example: "The alliance team isn't really that good, they are just zerging around the map." The term comes from Blizzard's real-time strategy game StarCraft, in which the Zerg were an alien race that could produce small, relatively weak units quickly. Zerging was commonly seen in Dark Age of Camelot. * Zerker noun A Runescape word meaning either Berzerker helm or a player with very high strength. Example "Look out that pure is a Zerker" * ZI - noun Short for "Zone-In", the place where one enters a zone. Typically, this would refer to the entrance of a dungeon, to be used as a meeting point. Example: "Let's head to the dungeon, the warrior will meet us at zi." * Zling / Zlinging *#noun person who is deliberately breaking all the rules *#noun person who is "owning" everything in the game, Defeating or taking everything. * Zone *# noun - Any subdivision of the virtual world; usually accompanied by loading of new content or some other transition. These areas also have distinctive styles and often are designed with a certain level in mind. For example, a zone may be a forest that is meant for level 15-20 players. *# verb - To move from one zone to another. Can also be used as a fleeing tactic in a battle that has turned bad for the players. Example: "This isn't winnable, zone out now!"
