Mary Kate Ryan

Mary Katherine 'Kit' Ryan (31 October 1878 - 18 July 1934) was the first wife of the second President of Ireland Seán T. O'Kelly. She was married to him from 1918 until 1934, following her death her sister Phyllis Ryan married him. They had no children. Her brother was James Ryan a Fianna Fáil minister, while another sister was married to Fine Gael leader General Richard Mulcahy. She was from Tomcoole, County Wexford. During the time of trouble in Ireland, surrounding the Easter Rising, she was imprisioned in Mountjoy Jail, along with her sister Nell. She was released on health grounds after a few weeks. She was appointed as an assistant at UCD in 1911. She later became a noted and successful professor of French Philology, a posistion she remained in until her death. She was, like her husband a Roman Catholic. She was 56 at the time of her death.
