Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia

Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia (sometimes known as the Markland Medieval Militia also as "Markland Co." and its members as Marklanders is a non-profit historical educational organization, incorporated in Maryland 1975-06-23 and operating mostly from the Virginias through the New York City area with a membership of about 500. This group's recreation is based around 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, "requiring (and allowing) more realistic medieval armor and truer fighting scenarios"... than contemporary re-enactment groups. Markland's Battle of Hastings, which was held yearly since its founding, was for a while the longest-running annually held North American re-enactment of a European Battle. The term Markland refers to the name Leif Ericson gave North America.
Markland members re-enact medieval life by constructing and using reproductions of the period's accouterments. In many ways this group is similar to other contemporary re-enactment groups.
Marklanders were part of the first student Monarchy Party—which they called the Monarchist Party—when they were attending University of Maryland, College Park.
