The Maldivian honours system has its origin in the system that was instituted by the Sultans of the Maldive Islands. The main honour that was conferred by the Sultans was the title Kilegefan. The honours system under the Maldivian monarchy In 1965,the Maldives became an independent monarchy, albeit, outside the Commonwealth. The honours system under the Second Republic of the Maldives Since the Maldives became a republic on 11 November 1968, the Maldivian Government has instituted an indigenous honours system. Since 1982, when the Maldives returned to its membership of the Commonwealth, the Maldivian honours system has been reclassified as a British Commonwealth honours system instead of a foreign one.
