Makiling Residence Hall

Makiling Residence Hall most commonly known as MAREHA is one of the dormitories under the Office of the Student Affairs of the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. It is located inside the College of Forestry and Natural Resources.

History
In 1979, the old Forest Research Institute (FORI) building now the UPLB Museum of Natural History was made into a dormitory called Makiling Residence Hall to cater to the growing housing needs of the students of this university. Its initial residents were not enough to fully occupy all the rooms of this dormitory.

Due to the isolation of the dormitory, its residents developed in them the real camaraderie that binds them as a real brotherhood. 1990, the Forestry Residence Hall Extension became the new enclave of MAREHA residence since the original building was made into the Museum of Natural History of the UPLB.

Now, though MAREHA currently receive the smallest fraction of
UPLB operational cost for the students’ dormitories and though lacking in grandeur, still the camaraderie and strong unity among the residents give rise to MAREHA’s right niche under the UPLB sun.

About
The Makiling Residence Hall (MAREHA) dormitory is one of the three dormitories located at the upper campus of the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. What differentiates it from the other dormitories in and around the university is that this dorm is exclusive for male students.

*Amenities, Facilities, and Equipment
The two-storey building is composed of more than twenty fully-painted rooms that can accommodate four residents each. These rooms have sealed doors to maintain privacy and window screens to prevent insects from coming in. Each room has two double beds all with comfortable mattresses. Each room also has four lockers, bookshelves, and study tables attached to the wall. The dorm has two comfort rooms with four sinks and four shower and toilet cubicles. On the hallways are fire extinguishers and emergency lamps that can be used in case of unexpected circumstances. The cozy lobby area can be used as a meeting place for group studies. Aside from these facilities, the dorm also has its own TV room. A DVD player is also available for the residents to use during weekends or their free time. A whiteboard inside the TV room is also available, which can be used during body meetings or other dorm-related activities. The dorm also offers a laundry area where residents could wash their dirty clothes during weekends or whenever they prefer. Inside the dormitory also is the fully air-conditioned computer room where students can avail of computer services such as typing, printing, and even internet access at very low prices. Beside it is the canteen that offers delicious foods and other supplies at affordable costs. Few steps from the dorm’s lobby area is the basketball court, which is also open for use of the residents.

*Staff
Manning the dormitory is Dorm Manager Nicanor Flores together with a trusted employee popularly known as “Kuya Percy.” Together, they respond to every resident’s needs, concerns, and issues ensuring that these are all resolved. Aside from the two, a set of officers elected each school year also helps in maintaining the welfare of every resident in the dormitory.

*The Community
MAREHA is composed of different residents from different regions in the Philippines with different undergraduate courses. All of these residents also have different personalities that trigger different reactions from one another. The good thing, however, is that the dorm somehow has this atmosphere of blending these various personalities together, making all the residents work together as one when needed. Though there may be rifts sometimes, what transpires more often is their aim to unify the dormitory.

*The Legacy
MAREHA is known for having competitive residents both in academics and non-academic activities. Most of its previous residents had graduated achievers in their respective courses and are now making their marks in their chosen fields. Current residents, on the other hand, continue to excel in their studies and in their respective organizations. Through the years, MAREHA was able to maintain its legacy of putting all the bright minds in one roof.

People
MAREHA is composed of a multitude of persona. It is composed of different types of people with different stories to share.

*Leaders
They are the ones you will often see speaking in front of a crowd. In MAREHA, they are the ones speaking in front of the “body” during body meetings. But not only that: they are the ones who initiate projects that the dorm will undertake. They mediate between conflicts. They resolve issues and settle problems. Among MAREHA’s remarkable leaders were Erico Patricio and Reiner Mariano. Aside from dorm leaders, other residents are also leaders in their own organizations, which the dorm can tap during activities as sponsors.

*Brainy Pips
They are the ones you’ll surely want to be with during “hell week.” They are the ones who know the answer to your every question. Most of them are at the top of their respective batches and are candidates as laude. Maurice Duka, who had just topped his board exam, is the perfect example of this type.

*Artists & Performers
MAREHA residents are not only intelligent; they are artistic and talented as well. A lot of them have shown excellence in singing, dancing, and even acting. A lot of these guys you will see during Cheering Competitions. Mark Canay, Erico Patricio, and Ruben Tecla to name a few.

*Opposers
They are the distinct few. They are the ones you will see during body meetings who would throw in endless queries. To some, they are irritating but to others they are the ones who provide the challenge to the officers to perform their tasks well. Who would ever forget Mark Talosig as the number 1 “opposer”?

Ang MAREHA ay may archive collection ng old exams sa forestry at pati narin sa foresters licensure exam. Kaya ito tinagurian itong "home of the toponotchers".
