MagicView

MagicView is an extension for the freeware outlining program Ecco Pro running on Microsoft Windows systems from Windows95 that lets users of Ecco Pro view and attach web pages and other document or graphics clips within the Ecco Pro program. The add-on lets users attach the pages as a 'folder value' within Ecco Pro.
MagicView is available for purchase and can also be downloaded from the EccoMV website for free. In order to capture web pages, encrypt text folder information, link between pages, or view HTML/RTF/PDF/DjVu formats within Ecco Pro, it is necessary to run the MagicView add-on and use the 'MagicView Pane' inside or outside of Ecco.
Supported data formats in MagicView include: pdf, dot, rtf, wri, txt, htm, html, mht, mhtml, xml, jpeg, png, gif, bmp, and hta. For viewing web pages and the other data formats, the MagicView add-on must be running in conjunction with Ecco Pro.
As with other Ecco Pro column panes, the 'magicview pane' is a live edit pane, directly editable as an active WYSIWYG Rich Text Format/Graphics column.
Functional Significance
Finding information and filing it away for later reference is one of the primary reasons people surf the Internet. Yet tools for saving and organizing all those useful bits of information found on the web are very limited and cumbersome.
The software tools to deal with this such as 'Net Snippets' or 'Surfulater' and similar programs, provide users with tools to clip, annotate, edit and manage information found on the Internet, but provide only very limited ability to organize the information with informational depth conceptually. Conceptual organization allowed in the tools is limited to a treeview control for organization.
While treeviews work fine for lists, their limited nature fails in handling complex outlines with deeper levels of items and sub-items, which requires more complex outlining tools..
Clipping information from the net is important to researchers, students, information specialists and individuals who rely heavily on the Internet as an information source. Prior to EccoMV, very large collections of web format information were limited in ability to access the information, either by treeview type basic list outlines or keyword searches. Unfortunately, basic lists and keyword searches are insufficient to retrieve information. In order to retrieve the information you need, it's really important to know how the information is organized. Organization provides access to information or a collection.
EccoMV is significant in providing a means to organize and access graphical, RTF, HTML and 'plug in' content (such as PDF, MHT, DjVu and similar file types) using a technical outliner.
