right Magen Lacholeh (), Shield and Protector of the Sick, is a Jerusalem,Israel-based non-profit organization, created in 1991 to bridge the growing abyss between patients and health professionals. It strives to provide the knowledge, contacts, support and equipment that allow every patient to receive the best possible medical care.
The organization is headed by Rabbi Benjamin Fisher and operates six branches throughout Israel.
Services
Medical Referral Hotline The medical referral hotline provides callers with up-to-date information on the doctors and medical facilities that best meet their immediate needs.
Appointment Scheduling Scheduling appointments with healthcare professionals and providers at medical institutions nationwide and around the world. The organization’s logic behind this service is that people with an understanding of the field and who have ongoing relationships with medical practitioners will be able to be more effective, saving patients from bureaucratic hassles and freeing them from having to negotiate with physicians and medical institutions when they are not equipped with the proper tools or knowledge. This service is also beneficial for the medical establishment, allowing them to handle technical and bureaucratic matters together with representatives of Magen Lacholeh, who are familiar with medical and technology terminology.
Counseling The counseling offered helps families cope with their loved one's illness and needs by providing them with background about medical procedures, various syndromes related to the disease and terminology, as well as information about alternative therapies and treatments. The counseling is given in clear, simple terms, using everyday language. The goal is to get families to a point where they have the knowledge they need to get through this difficult period.
Patient Transportation Magen Lacholeh provides patients with transportation to and from checkups and treatments in specially equipped ambulances. This service provides practical assistance to all those who contact the organization. Magen Lacholeh ambulances have been designed to suit multiple purposes: transportation for the elderly and wheelchair-bound, as well as intensive care patientss. The ambulances are fully equipped with sophisticated incubators to provide the safe transport of babies. The ambulance drivers are trained by Magen David Adom and are part of their volunteer response teams.
Medical Equipment Magen Lacholeh purchases and maintains medical equipment to which patients would otherwise not have access. It strives to continually implement new technology, ensuring that patients receive the most efficient treatment at any point in time.
Surgery Abroad Magen Lacholeh makes travel and living arrangements for patients whose medical conditions require them to travel abroad for treatment. The organization pays attention to the special needs of each patient and the family members traveling with them and takes care of arrangements from the moment the patient leaves Israel, throughout their stay abroad, until they return to Israel.
Bureaucracy and Red Tape The organization tries to ensure that patients and families deal as little as possible with the overwhelming amount of bureaucracy and red tape in the medical establishment in Israel and abroad. The organization also works with the major health insurance providers to help families recover as much of the costs of medical treatment as possible and to get more comprehensive coverage when what they have is insufficient.
