Longfellow Middle School serves grades 7-8 in Falls Church, Virginia. It is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools system. The principal is Vincent Lynch and the two assistant principals are Jane O'Hara (8th grade), and (taking over for Mary Taube) Peter Pommetto (7th Grade, who returned to being a gym teacher after one year). The school was named after the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is a two story building with 2 gymnasiums, 1 cafetorium, and a "Little Theater." It also has a 21 room modular building and a two room "mini mod."
Demographics Longfellow Middle School's student body in 2006-2007 was 66% White,19%Asian, 7% Hispanic, 3% Black, and 5% Other.
Feeder schools The Elementary schools that feed into Longfellow are: Chesterbrook, Haycock, Kent Gardens, Franklin Sherman, and Timberlane. Additionally, some students come from from Westgate, Spring Hill, Colvin Run, and Churchill Road Elementary school.
Most Longfellow students go to McLean High School, but some go to Langley High School, Marshall High School, or Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, although they must apply and be accepted to the latter as it is a magnet school.
Athletics Longfellow has two gymnasiums, two playing fields, 4 tennis courts, a basketball court, and a quarter mile gravel track. The gym uniform is Carolina blue with "Longfellow Physical Education" printed on it in large white letters. Longfellow does not have any school sponsored sports, but they do have many after-school activities which include flag football, basketball, and tennis. Once a year the students at Longfellow M.S. participate in an annual Track Meet versus Thoreau Middle School and Cooper Middle School. Longfellow's current mile run time record is 5 minutes 11 seconds.
