London Buses route 278

London Buses route 278 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Heathrow Airport and Ruislip. It is operated by Abellio London with 11 vehicles from Hayes (WS) garage covering a distance of 10 miles. When operation of this route commenced on 7 December 2019, it replaced the withdrawn section of London Buses route 140 between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport.
History
Route number 278 was previously used from 1960 to 1993.
The present Route 278 was proposed in 2017 as part of a wider raft of changes to the Transport for London bus network in anticipation of changing travel patterns due to the introduction of Elizabeth line services providing new transport connections from Reading and Heathrow in the West to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the East via Central London.
From the beginning, it was intended that the introduction of Route 278 would coincide with the withdrawal of Route 140 between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport as well as the introduction of Limited stop Route X140 serving only major stops between Heathrow Airport and Harrow Bus station.
During November 2019, it was announced that changes to Route 140, along with the introduction of routes 278, X140 and N140 would be implemented on 7 December 2019.
Route 278 restores connections that were severed with the withdrawal of Route 98 between Hillingdon Hill and Ruislip Station via Long Lane in 1989.
