List of Star Ocean locations
|
This is a list of locations in the Star Ocean series. Most entries, but not all, are fictional planets.
Star Ocean These are locations visited in the original Star Ocean and its remake The First Departure.
Roak Roak is located in the Theta sector, which is relatively close to Earth. The primary species of Roak is Felpool, a humanoid race sporting tails. There are also so-called Lesser Felpools, which are more primitive in nature, with more feline-like features, such as ears above the head. Another notable race are the Featherfolk, humanoids that resemble angels. Roak is considered an underdeveloped planet by Earth Federation standards, and consists of four main continents: Moore, Astral, Van, and Sylvalant. Each of these continents is also its own kingdom. In Star Ocean, the continents are seen experiencing only one particular season: Moore, spring; Astral, summer; Van, fall; and Sylvalant, winter.
The blood of Roak's native species of Felpool caused the planet to be pulled into a war between the Resonians and the Earth Federation in Stardate 346 (2432 A.D.). In contrast to human blood, the hemoglobin of Roakian blood contains copper instead of iron. More notably, it is able to absorb wavelengths between 240 nm and 780 nm, covering all of the visible light spectrum as well as a small section of both the infrared and ultraviolet. The Resonians unleashed a virus upon the planet to transform its natives into stone in order to easily harvest them, whereupon the Resonians could extract the Roakian blood as a basis for the cloaking technology of their starships.
Some of the original inhabitants of Roak were known as Moorians, and did not originate from Roak at all; rather, they came from Earth, specifically from the legendary continent of Mu. In the Star Ocean continuity, a meteorite struck Mu somewhere around 1000 B.C., which opened a wormhole to Roak.
Styx Styx is a lifeless and barren world. It is notable due to the ruins of an incredibly advanced civilization it contains. This civilization was advanced enough to build the Time Gate, a device which can create portals in time itself and allow travel. However, the Gate is not a mere machine and is in fact sentient. As such, it chooses who accesses its time travel power. In Star Ocean, the player's party asks the Time Gate to help them cure the viral outbreak on planet Roak. The Time Gate agrees, and they travel back 300 years in time to find the original virus so it can be used to create a serum.
Styx is currently the only recurring planet in the Star Ocean series. However, the official English release of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time translated the planet as Styx, a reference to the river Styx in Greek mythology that lead to the land of the dead.
Fargett Very little is known about the geography of the planet Fargett, except that it is very barren and devoid of almost all life. It also has a celestial neighbor, likely a moon or sister planet.
The original inhabitants of Fargett were Moorians, originally from the continent of Mu on Earth. A meteor crashed into the continent around 1000 B.C., sending the Moorians to Roak, Edifice, and Fargett, as well as possibly to other planets.
Arriving on this barren world, the Moorians began to experiment with genetic engineering and wormhole technology in order to survive. Their one successful product of genetic engineering was a superhuman by the name of Jie Revorse. Jie Revorse was the leader of the so called "third party" of the Resonians in the original Star Ocean. However, many Fargettians were opposed to this and asked the Federation for assistance. The Federation sent the war heroes Ronixis J. Kenni and Iria Silvestoli, along with their friends on Roak, to travel to Fargett and defeat Jie Revorse. Aided by the resistance member Ivana, the crew ascended Jie's tower stronghold and killed him.
The Second Story These are locations in Star Ocean: The Second Story, its remake The Second Evolution, as well as the television show Star Ocean EX, which is a retelling of the first disc of the game.
Milocinia
Milocinia is a planet in the Theta Sector, which like Roak and Expel, is relatively close to Earth.
Planet Milocinia was originally discovered by Ronixis J. Kenni's starship, the Calnus, in Stardate 366 (2452 A.D.). While at the time the planet showed no signs of life, ancient ruins on the planet's surface suggested that it was at one time inhabited. Most of these ruins were destroyed, however, hinting that there was some sort of large-scale war or disaster. Ronixis J. Kenni's son, Claude C. Kenni, as a member of the survey team, was observing a relic in one of the ruins, whereupon it suddenly forced him into a sphere of light and transported him to the planet Expel, thus beginning the events of Star Ocean: The Second Story.
It was later learned that the Milocinians possessed the knowledge of Creation Energy, which is likely what destroyed their civilization. The Federation utilized the ruins on this planet, along with the Quadratic Keys on Expel, to create its own version of Creation Energy some several hundred years later.
Expel
Expel is the primary setting of Star Ocean: The Second Story. Like , Expel is a planet located in the Theta Sector, so it is relatively close to Earth. Expel is unique in that it is a melting pot of sorts, caused by interspecies mating over a long period of time. Consequently, its inhabitants exhibit a wide range of characteristics. These characteristics may include long ears, natural symbological ability, or even the feline-like characteristics of Felpools, as seen in the original Star Ocean. However, as stated in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, this only occurs when two parents share a recessive gene in the 12th chromosome. Expel is considered an underdeveloped planet by Earth Federation standards, and is composed of 3 major continents: Cross, Lacour, and El. There is also a polar ice cap and a desert island.
During the course of the game, the planet is destroyed when its orbit is adjusted to collide with nearby Energy Nede in order to release the Ten Wise Men from their prison. By altering spacetime on Energy Nede, however, it is restored.
Expel is home to unique energy stones known as Quadratic Keys. When combined with Quadratic Spheres, they can release enormous amounts of energy. According to Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, these Quadratic Keys were the basis of the Earth Federation's creation energy which would power much of the Federation's needs.
Energy Nede Energy Nede is an artificial planet created by the natives of Nede, a planet that has since been destroyed. According to official Nede histories, the formerly large and powerful Nedian empire of four billion years ago decided to voluntarily withdraw from the galaxy, and went to live in seclusion on Energy Nede. However, archives in the town of Giveaway (accessible by a sidequest in game) claim that Nede was losing its grip on revolting subjects. The Ten Wise Men project was created to stop the revolt and defeat the rebels, but after Dr. Lantis went insane and "re-purposed" the Ten Wise Men, the Nedians realized that they had lost. They retreated to Energy Nede, while destroying Nede to seal the Ten Wise Men.
Cities on Energy Nede include Central City, North City, Giveaway, Armlock, and Fun City. Other locations include the tower Fienal, the military base L'Aqua, the Mihne Cavern, and four "Fields" of various attributes.
At the end of Star Ocean 2, Energy Nede is destroyed, but the formerly destroyed Expel is restored as a result. Rena, and possibly Noel and Chisato (if they were recruited), are the only surviving Nedians.
Blue Sphere Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, a spinoff sequel to The Second Story, mainly takes place on one planet, Edifice.
Edifice Edifice is home to two primary species: humans very similar to those on Earth, and the native Edifans, an underwater race. Edifice is considered an underdeveloped planet by Earth Federation standards. Only one continent of Edifice is seen in the game; there is a possibility that others exist. Edifice has a unique history, in that every 200 years some sort of disaster takes place that virtually wipes out civilization; the few remaining survivors then rebuild their shattered planet. Most recently, Edifice was struck by a tsunami 200 years ago; a new disaster is about due around the time the characters in Blue Sphere arrive.
Only one continent is seen in Star Ocean: Blue Sphere.
Till the End of Time These are locations visited during Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.
Hyda IV Hyda IV is a tectonically stable planet renowned for its generally mild, tropical climate. It has over the years become a resort world for people from all over the galaxy, within or from beyond the Federation's boundaries. The population of this world is unknown. The game begins here on one of its many resorts. This is the only planet that the player cannot revisit later in the game.
Vanguard III Vanguard III is an underdeveloped planet with intelligent humanoid lifeforms around 16th century Earth levels of development. Its axial tilt results in extreme seasonal weather, making summers blazing hot and winters blisteringly cold, and the planet's inhabitants are weak physically because their world has fairly low gravity. The inhabitants of the planet generally hang around the forested areas of the coast and seem to live quite simplistic lives. Although they look exactly like humans in most ways, they do have elongated ears. Little else is known of Vanguard III.
Elicoor II Elicoor II is an underdeveloped planet with intelligent humanoid lifeforms around 17th century Earth levels of development, with a few exceptions. The planet consists of two large landmasses: Gaitt, where the player spends a significant portion of the game, and Greeton, a technological power that is never explored in Star Ocean 3 though it is hinted that it has a technological level equal to earth at the late 20th century. An archipelago exists which consists of the planet's above-sea crust. A variety of different countries and cultures exist on Gaitt, including the mining nation Airyglyph, the matriarchal theocracy Aquaria, and the tribal confederation of the Sanmite Republic. The bulk of Star Ocean 3 occurs on this planet.
Moonbase Not a planet, Moonbase is a large space station, complete with habitation and recreation as well as research districts that orbits Luna (Earth's moon). Fayt Leingod's father did much of his work here, and Sophia Esteed was born here. Its stylistic motifs are futuristic, which deviates from the prior late-Middle Ages motifs.
Styx revisited Styx is a lifeless and barren world. was visited in the original Star Ocean by Ronixis J. Kenni and others to use the Time Gate to cure the virus menacing the planet . In Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, the gate is used by Fayt, Maria, and Sophia to access 4-D Space, though by the time of Star Ocean 3, the planet is crawling with Executioners. The Time Gate is considered an "Out of Place Artifact" by the Federation.
4-D Space 4-D Space is a dimension above the one in which the inhabitants of the Star Ocean universe live. It consists of eight "satellite cities", including Arkives, Gemity, and Lost City. The 4-D megacorporation known as Sphere Company resides here.
