List of minor characters on Ugly Betty

A list of characters who appeared briefly or show up from time to time on Ugly Betty.

Philippe Michel
Philippe Michel (William Abadie) is a freelance photographer who is a close friend to Daniel Meade. He has also known to plagiarize other shoots after Betty, who happens to be a fan of his, points out one that looks like it was done in another spread. He was the one who encouraged Daniel to get her to quit in the first episode, but he was also working with Wilhelmina Slater to sabotage Daniel's job so Wilhelmina can take it over, as evidenced by the Fabia ad campaign, which would later be thwarted by Betty. Originally Philippe was supposed to be a regular character on the series, but the pilot episode was his only appearance.

Vincent Bianchi
Vincent Bianchi (Rhys Coiro) is another freelance photographer who once worked with Meade Publications but left over creative differences. But when Betty learned through her father that he was from Queens, she convinced him to come back to MODE for a series of shoots, for which he agreed because he wanted to meet her.

Carlos Medina
Carlos Medina (Nicholas Gonzalez) is an Assistant Editor at MODE's rival Isabella. He was responsible for putting Betty, Marc and Amanda's jobs in jeopardy after he stole the ideas for MODE's Christmas shoot, for which they were cleared of wrongdoing from Wilhelmina, who in turn hired Carlos to become her mole at Isabella.

Carol
Carol (Miranda Frigon) is a MODE employee who criticizes her co-workers and constantly eats. She lost her job after she spilled the Christmas spread details to Carlos. Carol is nicknamed "Skinny Carol" by Christina McKinney and "Fat Carol" by Marc and Amanda, who are slimmer than she is.

Ruthie
Ruthie (Played by Becki Newton in a dual role) is the assistant editor at MYW (Modern Young Women), a job that Sofia Reyes promised to Betty. When Betty went to work for Sofia, she and Ruthie hit it off right away, particularly because Ruthie really admired Betty's style. She also acts and dresses like Betty. Ruthie was very loyal to Sofia, however, so when Betty learned of Sofia's duplicity (using Daniel as the subject story for the premiere issue of MYW), she had to get through Ruthie for the proof she needed to expose the truth to Daniel. After Betty quits MYW, it was unknown at this point on whether Ruthie absorbed Betty's duties.

Ted LeBeau
Ted LeBeau (Brett Cullen) is the founder/owner of the BeauMart Department store chain and a single father who swept Wilhelmina off her feet. He broke up with her in order to reconcile with his estranged wife, Joanna.

Oshi
Oshi is a fashion designer for Mode. He is Japanese, speaks little English and has a group of followers at all times. One of them carries a stereo with Asian Hip Hop music playing and another an advisor who translates for him. He likes "Clean, White, Simple" or "Round, White, Simple". His fashion show was held in the Mode tunnel simply because of it's white wall. He was saddened to learn of Fey Sommers' death.

Mr. Green
Mr. Green (Sal Landi) is a henchman who works for Bradford Meade in an effort to "clean up messes." He was responsible for placing Steve in Fey's empty casket and told Bradford that a relative did verify that Fey had died.

Leah Stillman
Leah Stillman (Debi Mazar) is a lawyer who befriends Hilda and agrees to help her represent Ignacio in his immigration case. However Betty discovered that Leah was using the family by scamming them out of the money that was given to Hilda by Santos, thus leading to more trouble for the Suarezes.

Dr. Gabe Farkas
Gabe Farkas (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is Betty's orthodontist, who Betty asked out for a date after Henry invited her to Charlie's birthday party. While the two did hit it off (Betty pretended to have her wire on her braces cut so he can ask her out), the date would lead to more surprises. At the party, Charlie told Betty that Gabe was the right person for her. But their first night out would prove disastrous as she ends up taking Gabe with her as she tried and succeeded in stopping Claire Meade from leaving the country. In the end Gabe told Betty that even though he liked her, he felt that she can find someone better and left.

However, in the first season finale, Betty learned that two months after their ill-fated date, Gabe was seeing Charlie and may have gotten her pregnant. It is now evident that Charlie's baby was also Henry's. This is very unfortunate for Henry.

Diane
Diane (Kristin Chenoweth) is Gabe's assistant, a technician who loves romantic comedies and becomes overly involved in her patients' lives – including Betty's. On the day Betty was scheduled to have a cavity filling, Diane asked Betty who was this woman that trapped Henry ("she probably poked holes in his condoms"). She asks for a name to hate this girl with a name to which Betty replies, "Charlie." Diane says that Gabe has been seeing a cute red head named Charlie who makes jewelry and shows her the bracelet she made the staff. When Betty discovers this, she realizes that Charlie had been cheating on Henry with Gabe and that Henry may not be the father of Charlie's baby.

Angelica
Angelica (Angelica Vale) is another technician who also works at Dr. Farkas' office, but all she ever does is complain, mostly to Diane, who calls her "Shrek". Angelica, like Betty, is also unattractive and wears braces and glasses. Interestingly she looks exactly like Leticia "Lety" Padilla Solís, the character from "La fea mas bella," the Mexican counterpart of Ugly Betty, who is also played by Vale.

Mrs. Jean Weiner
Jean Weiner (Patti LuPone) is the meddling mother of Marc St. James, who shows up in New York City for a cat show in which her pet, Lady Buttons, is a contestant. When she stops by to see Marc and his "ex-girlfriend" Amanda (he never told his family about being gay), she blames Amanda for breaking his son's heart...until she pawns Jean off to Betty and tells her that she is dating Marc, prompting Marc to have Betty play along until she leaves. But when Mrs. Weiner meets Betty's family (who also went along with the prank) its apparent that she is very prejudiced when she starts making comments about them, until Marc defended them and finally came out to his mother. Unfortunately, his mother rejected his homosexuality and left town afterwards. Look for Jean to return in the second season as she will continue to make critical judgments about Marc's life and lifestyle.

Quincy Combs
Quincy Combs (Leslie Jordan) is a Truman Capote-type tell-all writer whose best sellers have been known to take down celebrities. In "Punch Out" he revealed that he had in possession Fey Sommers' secret diaries, in which he would use to get dirt on the entire Meade clan by tricking Betty into finding out what place Daniel going to, being bribed by Wilhelmina with photos of Alexis so she can seduce Bradford, and telling Alexis about a "dungeon" that Bradford and Fey would secretly go to (which by the way is located in Christina's workspace, after Amanda accidentally opens it).

Petra
Petra (AnnaLynne McCord) is a model who seduces and later sleeps with Daniel, only to reveal to him afterwards that she is underage, or so she claims. Betty soon realizes that Petra is lying about her age when she remembers that she'd earlier observed the model attempting to buy a pack of cigarettes from a street vendor who required her to show proof that she was at least 18 years old. It's revealed by her passport that she's actually 20 years old.

Lena
Lena (Ivana Milicevic) is another model who claims to be Petra's sister, or so Daniel thought. After he slept with Petra, Lena reveals to Daniel that she is Petra's mother and blackmails him into putting Petra on the cover of MODE, until Betty saw through their ruse and thwarted their plans after learning that Petra was indeed a legal adult after all.

Tavares
Tavares (Mykel Shannon-Jenkins) is a male African-american fashion designer, whose designs grab the attention of Amanda and after being turned away the first time around, Wilhelmina. At first, Amanda and Marc thought he was gay. That was until Amanda became more interested in his designs (and his "A+ hind") as he visits his studio apartment, where after taking off her clothes in front of him, she learns that Tavares is actually straight; he's pretending to be gay because it is the only way that he can get his designs noticed. However, Amanda does fall for Tavares and agrees to help him (in exchange for "Free Clothes"). But this union made her friendship with Marc jealous because he was unaware of Tavares' true sexuality. After Marc sees Amanda and Tavares kissing, she comes clean and tells Marc about Tavares' secret. However, their relationship would end after Tavares took advantage of Amanda's generosity.

Rodrigo Veloso
Rodrigo Veloso (Cristian de la Fuente) is a creative director at sister publication MODE Brasil, who was in town for a series of shoots that would be featured in the magazine. He swept Alexis off her feet and gave her the first sexual experience ever as a woman. He even asked her to come to Brazil with him. However, it turned out that he was paid off by Bradford Meade (through the suggestion of Wilhelmina) to get Alexis out of the country. Alexis would find out about this after she picked up a phone and overheard Rodrigo's conversation with her dad, prompting Alexis to end the relationship quickly.

Yoga
Yoga (Lorraine Toussaint) is a fellow cellmate at the correctional institute where Claire Meade is currently serving a sentence for Fey Sommers' murder. She was the one who gave Claire a bruise after Alexis, who was visiting Claire, asked how she got it (She simply said, "From Yoga"). At the end of the first season, she and Claire are seen making their escape en route to prison. Starting with the second season, Yoga will be a recurring regular on the show.

The "Uglies"
The "Uglies" referred to by Marc as "The Bizarro version of Sex and the City," are a group of women who work at MODE but are less attractive than their coworkers. The "Uglies" are based on "La Cuartel de las Feas" on Betty la Fea. Zelda is based on Mariana Valdéz (pertaining to their appearance).

Betty and Christina are part of this quartet, which also includes:
* Zelda (Cicily Daniels), a large, gossipy African-American.
* Nancy (Kristen Schaal in the pilot; replaced by Corinne Dekker in the second episode), a sickly-looking, vegan plain jane.

The Tanens
The Tanens (Kurt Fuller and Stephanie Faracy) are the adopted parents of Amanda Tanen, who raised her after Amanda's real mother, Fey Sommers, decided that she couldn't give Amanda the parental guidance that a normal mother would and at the same time didn't want the world know about Fey having a child, plus the Tanens couldn't have children as her adopted father (who was Fey's investment banker) claimed to have a sperm problem. When Amanda and Marc went to visit them, Amanda asked if they kept any secrets beside being Fey's daughter from them; her adopted mother claims they weren't, but as Amanda discovers in shock, it appears the truth about the Tanens' sex life was exposed after they appeared from their bedroom in their pajamas, along with that of another couple who followed them afterwards -- The Tanens are swingers.

Dwayne
Dwayne (Rick Fox) is a bodyguard hired by Wilhelmina to protect her from Claire Meade after she escaped en route to prison. But it appears that Dwayne and Wilhelmina are also spending part of their time sleeping together, even as Wilhelmina prepares to "Marry" Claire's ex, Bradford Meade. Betty and Christina were witnesses to Wilhelmina and Dwayne's "Afternoon Delight" while they attempted to get a magazine mock-up from Wilhelmina's apartment (Both Betty and Dwayne were also thinking of the Starland Vocal Band 1976 song when that word came up).

Ramiro Vasquez
Ramiro Vasquez was a banker from Mexico who was married to Rosa when Ignacio Suarez was working for them as their personal chef in 1975. Ramiro was also very abusive towards Rosa, a move that resulted in her turning to Ignanio and in the process falling in love with him. However as she was about to leave Ramiro for Ignacio, Ramiro decided that he was going to kill Ignacio, but Ignacio, a former boxer, beat Ramiro in self-defense and fled Mexico, claiming that he had killed him.

But that claim of Ramiro's death turned out to be a hoax, as it appears that someone was waiting for Ignacio to come back to seek revenge after his visa has been denied. In Family/Affair, as Ignacio was about to go home after he got his visa, a person pointed a gun at him after opened the door. It was later revealed in the episode Betty's Wait Problem that Ramiro was actually alive. He was shown to be very cruel and hinted to be abusive to his own son as he hit with his cane. Ramiro also stated that he justified his abuse to Rosa, stating that she was "my wife". He had waited thirty years to kill him by using his son Hector. However at the end of the episode, there was no resolution to whom was shot after Ignacio talked Hector out of shooting him when he reminded Hector of Rosa being abused by Ramiro.

Hector Vasquez
Hector Vasquez is the son of Ramiro Vasquez. He was led to believe from his father that Ignacio was resposible for Rosa leaving his dad, which Hector witnessed when he was five. While it was thought that he was also Rosa's son, Ignacio stated that, "Rosa loved him like he was her own son and they thought he would be safe with his mother when they left". Making him Rosa's stepson and Ramiro's son from a previous marriage. When he was ordered by Ramiro to shoot Ignacio, Ignacio reminded him the truth of why Rosa left. That Rosa left because of the abuse she suffered from Ramiro, which he witnessed when he was five and that Rosa tried to hide from his father's abuse. Hector began to fret when his father told him to kill Ignacio, but as with Ramiro, there was no answer to whether Hector or his father was killed.
