Death
On August 12, 1998, Whitney was leaving sheriff’s headquarters in Ventura at about 6 PM when she came to a busy intersection just outside of the county government center. The lights at the intersection were not functioning due to a power outage stemming from a transformer explosion. Tanya Pittman, traveling 56 MPH in a 45 MPH zone, failed to stop at the inoperative light, which under the rules of the road must be treated as four-way stop, and struck Whitney’s patrol car. Whitney was extracted from the vehicle by the fire department using cutting equipment, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Pittman was found to have been under the influence of methamphetamine and muscle relaxers at the time of the collision and was convicted of vehicular manslaughter.
