Liam Leonard is an author of three books on environmental issues and social movements in Ireland. He is a lecturer in sociology and political studies in the National University of Ireland. A former constituency secretary and youth officer for the Labour Party of Ireland, Dr. Leonard is now involved in Green Party politics, and has worked to create links between the Northern Ireland Greens and their counterparts in the Republic of Ireland. He is the Founder and Senior Editor of the Ecopolitics Online Journal.
Dr. Leonard was born in Philadelphia in the United States, and has lived in London and Dublin before settling in the west of Ireland. He was conferred with a PhD in Political Science and Sociology, having first gained a MPhil in Irish Studies from the National University of Ireland((http://www.nuigalway.ie)). Dr. Leonard is also founder and editor of Irish Greenhouse Press, publishers of books and online material, with a primary focus on environmental issues and political sociology. Dr. Leonard has been a participant in two major studies on the environment in Ireland, the Cohmar Environmental Democracy Report ((http://www.environmentaldemocracy.ie)) and the 'Climate Change Challenge'; the cross-party and inter-NGO initiative, taken in the wake of the recent EU and UK findings on the economics and climate change, the recent UN conference on climate change, and the release of the Irish Government Estimates in November 2006. Green Nation: the environmental movement in Ireland from Carnsore Point to the Rossport 5 (2006) Galway: Irish Greenhouse Press Ecopolitics Series Volume 2 and Drogheda: Choice. Green Nation, Leonard's second book, has been critically acclaimed for its development of an understanding of the rural based nature of the Irish environmental movement. The book introduces the author's concept of 'rural sentiment' or the visceral connections which links communities to their hinterlands, leading to episodes of collective action against infrastructural developments.
