Legiotex is a European project funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Program. It started on 1 September 2011 and lasted two years. The project is developed by a Consortium set up by partners from different European Countries. Legiotex project has come out in several media: * EuropaNu News * La Rioja Government newsletter * Economic development agency of La Rioja * Local newspaper * Newspaper article The partners Legiotex, born out of a europe-wide collaborative project. In the first part of the project, the companies involved were (Italy), Inspiralia Advanced Technologies S.L. (Spain), Teknologisk Institutt AS (Norge), Elkede Technology and Design Centre S.A. (Hellas), Idrodepurazione (Italy), Accepta Ltd (United Kingdom) and Minerva Biolabs GmbH (Deutschland). Finally the partners who followed in this second phase were Biolabs Minerva Gmbh (Germany) and Idrodepurazione (Italy) like industrial associations and Logrotex, S.A.(Spain) as coordinator. Objectives The Legiotex project's aim is to provide quality and healthiness by using new technologies and scientific aid filters applied in refrigeration and air conditioning. Complying with established laws and providing outdoor environments with harmful bacteria. Legiotex, is a non-woven filter fabric. A certificate prototype filter system capable of inhibiting the growth and proliferation of bacteria belonging to the family Legionella pneumophila. Thanks to the combination of antibacterial fibers and airlay technology ideal porosity is achieved for retaining the micro-droplets of water (2-5 microns) carrier of the bacterium. The filter prevents the accumulation of bacteria increasing efficiency. Its effectiveness lies in the biocide incorporated into the fibers at the time of its formation. This produces a resistance to washing and biocidal properties more permanent and stable over time. The need The filter is certified by the Oeko-tex standard certificate 100 Class III, which proves it is harmless when it comes into contact with skin. It prevents the growth of bacteria and destroys its surface minimizing the chance of spreading the disease, creating healthier public spaces. Suitable for facilities that use water in their open loop operation such as in: * Cooling towers and / or evaporative condensers. * Air conditioning ducts. * Heated pools and spa facilities. * Aerosolization cooling elements outdoors. * Other devices that can hold water and can aerosalized it. Moreover, the filter is effective against other pathogens including: * Escherichia coli. * Staphylococcus aureus. * Enterococcus faecalis. * Aspergillus niger. Project status In a second demo-project, based on the results of the first project. The filter Legiotex is mounted onto a disposal cartridge for its quick replacement, and this within a metal housing to be easily installed in different equipments, to have an optimum fluid-dynamic behaviour and successful commercialization. The system has been tested under real working conditions, in several demonstration installations of representative facilities in risk of becoming a source of legionnaire´s disease (a potentially fatal pneumonia-like infection) to corroborate the efficacy of the developed prototype.
