Lambda Chi Rho

Lambda Chi Rho(ΛXP) is a local sorority at Kean Universityin Union Township, Union County, New Jersey founded in 1962. The organization is a service based organization that founded when Kean University was Newark State Teachers College. The sorority colors are brown for the earth, yellow for the sun which gives life, and beige is for impurities as a reminder that nothing is perfect. Most Greek organizations have symbols. The symbols for Lambda Chi Rho are the yellow rose for friendship and the gavel for leadership. The sorority motto is “Sunshine and Sisterhood”, and the slogan is, “Leadership Creates Responsibility”. Their sorority crest consists of a yellow rose and a gavel and the founding date of the sorority in 1962. Currently, Lambda Chi Rho is one of 30 Greek organizations recognized at the University.

History

Lambda Chi Rho was formed by 25 women in 1961, and became officially recognized at Kean (formerly Newark State College) in 1962. The birthdate of the sorority is March 16, 1962. The organization was founded by women who were mostly education majors, but now the organization has members of all different majors. The first class had 60 women.

Community Service

Today the women of Lambda Chi Rho are dedicated to community service and are involved with donating to many organizations and charities around the country.

Membership

Membership today consists of women from all different backgrounds, cultures and majors. Many of the members are education majors, but other majors that the sisters are include Biology, Writing, Media and Film, Psychology and a host of others. The organization is one of the most diverse sororities on campus and the racial backgrounds of the sisters range from Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, to Portuguese. Lambda Chi Rho currently has about 17 members at Kean University. All members know the history and have gone through traditional requirements to become a part of the organization. The members of Lambda Chi Rho participate in many events at Kean such as the annual Meet the Greeks, the Greek Olympics, Campus Awareness and a host of others.
