On May 7, 2015 the Town of Gene Autry held a special election. Lawson won the election for the town and appointed John Wickware as Vice-Mayor. Once elected Lawson hit the ground running, his first month in office he conducted an audit into the towns accounts and discovered missing funds. Lawson formed a Town Council, appointed officers and a new Fire Chief, they then began the process of establishing policies and procedures to protect the town and its accounts.
Shortly after the election the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum was closed due to lack of insurance and there was no active board of directors to run the 501(c)3 know as the Gene Autry Historical Society. Working with the Oklahoma Center for Non-Profits, Lawson began the process of filling vacant seats on the board of directors. Once seats were filled Lawson worked with the Board of Directors for the Gene Autry Historical Society to move the Museum forward and work on re-opening it. This event took place on September 26, 2015, 500 people attended this event and it was a very positive influence on the community.
