Harivansh Rai Bachchan is a celebrated and noted Indian author and poet and has been honored with the Padma Bhushan award for his contributions to Hindi literature. Koshish Karne Walon Ki Kabhi Har Nahi Hoti is an inspirational piece of poetry that summarizes the importance of perseverance. Translation The English Translation of the poem formally written in Hindi is as goes: < If the boat fears the waves, it cannot sail the ocean Those who try never lose When a small ant carries food, it will climb walls and slip 100 times, With confidence and conviction the ups and downs are of no bother, In the end the ant’s efforts do not go in vain Those who try never lose Divers dive deep into the ocean to find a pearl, Oftentimes their search remains unfulfilled, Pearls are not easily found in the ocean, However they do not always return empty-handed Those who try never lose Failure is a challenge, accept it Find what is lacking and change it, Until you succeed sacrifice your sound sleep, do not run away from adversity Appreciation is not easily given Those who try never lose> Analysis The poem is written in four stanzas, each about different scenarios, signifying the importance of always trying despite challenges or failures. The first stanza indicated that the fear of failure should not keep the one achieving their goal. The second and third stanza discusses the importance of grit despite hurdles and unsuccessful attempts. The last stanza interprets the value of failure and how one can overcome such challenges with discipline and drive, because those who make an effort will succeed. The poem provides encouragement and motivation to continue making progress towards ones’ goals despite hurdles in situations or failed attempts. Media Couplets of this poem were used in the movie “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara”. Controversy There was a misperception that the poem’s original author was Suryakant Nirala. However, Bachchan’s son, Amitabh Bachchan, later confirmed that Harivansh Rai Bachchan was the original author.
