Konstrukteur

The origin of the word Konstrukteur is the French "Constructeur" which has the meaning builder, inventor and designer.
A Konstrukteur is an engineer or a skilled engineering technician who works in the field of engineering that might have formerly been known as "design" or "mechanical design". A Konstrukteur coalesces ideas, principles, design considerations, calculations and procedures into a manufacturable product design described by electronic models, specifications and drawings.
Up to the 70ies of the 20th century, mechanical designers and draftsmen worked shoulder to shoulder to design and desrcibe complex products. The mechanical designer created an engineering layout, which was the basis for drawings created by the draftsman. Gradually, 3D electronic models have taken the place of the engineering layout and, sometimes, the drawings. The 3D models are used even for sophisticated finite element analysis. Thus was created a new skill set requirement, one with both engineering and electronic modeling expertise - the Konstrukteur. By this definition the Konstrukteur is not a "CAD jockey" .
