Katherine Sweetman is a contemporary artist, arts writer, and former director of Lui Velazquez art space in Tijuana, Mexico. Education Sweetman has an MFA from the University of California San Diego. A BFA in Arts and Technology from California State University, San Marcos and certificate from The New School in New York. Artwork and exhibitions Some of Sweetman's significant projects include a collaboration for Art Meets Fashion, a documentary film titled "Gringos Living in Tijuana", about seven non-Hispanic people who chose to live in Tijuana; the Freephone project, a collaboration with Micha Cárdenas, Elle Mehrmand, Chris Head, Camilo Ontiveros, and Felipe Zúniga; and Lucent, a public art collaboration with Owen Mundy for The Office of Graduate Affairs on the campus of University of California, San Diego. Katherine Sweetman's works have exhibited in galleries and museums in both North America and Europe including Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE); The Voz Alta Project in San Diego; ON-OFF Artprojects in Hamburg, Germany; The San Diego Museum of Art; Ciné Lab in Athens, Georgia; Brevard Art Museum in Melborne, Florida; 3rd Ward Brooklyn in New York; Lui Velazquez in Tijuana; Telic Arts Exchange in Los Angeles; and The Getty Center in Los Angeles. Controversial Activism As an unpaid arts blogger for The San Diego Union Tribune, Sweetman wrote a resignation piece in the Union Tribune blog suggesting a boycott of the paper by visual artists in response to the layoff of art critic Robert Pincus.
