Kashmir Independence Alliance

Founded in September 2007, the Kashmir Independence Alliance is a political group working for the establishment of an independent state comprising those areas of the state of Jammu and Kashmir that are principally inhabited by Kashmiri speaking people.

The group's ideology asserts that the Kashmiri people are a nation united by a common language and common history, regardless of faith. As such, it espouses the cause of the Kashmiri language and emphasises the role of Kashmiri as the national language of the Kashmiri people.

The group supports the establishment of an independent Kashmiri state.

Ideology

The group's ideology is nationalistic and rejects the two-nation theory of Pakistan and the one-nation theory of pan-Indian expansionists.

As regards the role of religion in government, the Group does not reject Islamism or the establishment of an Islamic state. However, it believes that whatever form of government is adopted in Kashmir (whether it be a secular democratic regime or an Islamic state), it ought to respect the reality of a Kashmiri nation-state.

Activities

The group believes in peaceful politics and draws its inspiration from the political ideas of Gandhi and the Dalai Lama. It shuns violence as a means of achieving political ends - it emphasises civil disobedience and non-violent nonco-operation.

The group plans to launch mass processions, public meetings and protests in the Kashmir region together with a campaign to disseminate propaganda by leaflets, books, articles, the internet and other forms of media.

Membership

The group has a fluid membership - currently, the group's central executive is based overseas in the United States, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. However, the Group has a large support base within the Kashmir valley and the adjoining regions. For funding, it depends solely on members' contributions and donations from wealthy individuals.

Publicity

The group has not publicised its formation in any of the usual media outlets, but plans to publicise its establishment in the near future by issuing press releases and holding inaugural meetings. The group hopes to coincide this publicity activity with the holding of a Kashmiri National Congress in the valley sometime in 2008.
