"Karate Star" is the eighteenth episode of season seven of the animated comedy SpongeBob SquarePants and the hundredth and forty-fourth individual episode overall, originally aired on July 9, 2010. Anthropomorphic sponge Spongebob teaches his best friend, Patrick karate and Patrick manages to master a karate chop. But soon, all hell breaks loose when Patrick cannot control his hand and goes around karate-chopping virtually everything that he sees. The storyline of "Karate Star" was written by Casey Alexander, Derek Iversen and Zeus Cervas. It was directed by Tom Yasumi. "Karate Star" is the first karate-themed episode to not feature Sandy Cheeks, an anthropomorphic squirrel who is SpongeBob's karate sparring partner. The episode is also hinted to be referencing the film "The Karate Kid". Plot SpongeBob uses his karate skills to make food when Patrick comes in to ask for a bucket full of cheese. Then, when he sees SponbgeBob doing karate, he wants to learn it, too. SpongeBob teaches Patrick the techniques of karate, but after several tries, SpongeBob tells him that he will never be successful. Angered, Patrick unwittingly chops a cinder block and SpongeBob is impressed. He is even more impressed when Patrick chops down an abandoned boat. SpongeBob tells Patrick that he has mastered karate, but warns him never to harm anyone with his newly learnt skill. Later, Patrick puts his chopping skills to the test, but takes it a little too far by unawaringly chopping everything it sees, including buildings, an arcade machine, and even in front of an ice cream vendor. SpongeBob tries to stop Patrick from causing mayhem, but his arm seems to have a mind of its own. When Patrick destroys the Barg'n Mart, he blames his arm for crushing his best friend and rips it off. When SpongeBob finally comes to, he is shocked to find his friend's arm missing, but it regenerates back. Patrick then puts the Barg'n Mart back together when another Patrick comes in and karate chops a shopping cart. Patrick says that if bodies can regenerate arms, then arms can regenerate bodies. After that, the Barg'n Mart collapses. Reception The Internet Movie Database has given "Karate Star" a favorable rating of 6.7 stars, out of 10 stars, while TV.com has given the episode 8/10 stars, classifying it as a "great" episode.
