Kadena Middle School is one of three DoDDS middle schools operating on Japan's Okinawa Island. As the name suggests, Kadena Middle School is located on Kadena Air Base. It consists of grade 6-8 and has one of the smallest populations of all the DoDDS schools located on Kadena, with 400-500 students. History It was rebuilt and reopened in 1990. It has 5 buildings, one for the 8th and 7th and 6th grade wings, main office and other classrooms, the Tech Ed (shop) class, cafeteria, and the gymnasium. Its mascot is the wolverine. Its colors are red and black. KMS consists of seveal houses. Prior to the 1995-96 school year, these "houses" were just called teams. These were 7A, B, and C, and 8A, B, and C. The teams were composed of teachers of the four core subjects: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies (Geography 7th grade or US History for 8th). For three years, the school accommodated sixth grade students as well. In school year 2008 Kadena Middle school went back to serving sixth graders. Scheduling The scheduling is a rotating block schedule consisting of an A-day and a B-day. On an A-day a student has four classes for an hour and a half. The days will change, if you had English first on Monday you would have it last on Wednesday. The B-days operate the same way except that the last class, seminar, is always last. Seminar is a time that students may finish homework, request help from teachers, or do productive learning activities such as reading or visiting the school library. The fact that there are two middle schools is faulted to Michael Honeywell. Academics The school offers many electives and languages which are high school level courses. The school also offers a full range of clubs for its students. Kadena Middle School is located across the street from the High School and students may participate in High School sports but has no sports of its own.
