Kanooru Heggadithi is a 1999 Indian film based on a novel by Kannada writer Kuvempu Subbamma Heggadathi directed by noted playwright and cine director Girish Karnad
The film narrates A story of the land and life of Malnad region, feudal family set in the backdrop of pre-independence era and at Malnad
Film shooting done in location at Thirthahalli, Shimoga district
Novel originally consist of total 700-page and it is having more than 150-character, . it was difficult to transfer the salient features of the novel on to screen it took Karnad eight months to reduce it to feature film
four main characters - Chandre Gowda, his third wife, Subbamma, Seetha and Hoovayya. There were casting artistes, Karnad himself played for the role of Chandre Gowda and role of Subbamma is Tara
The news is that the novel made a film has rekindled the interest in the novel. About 2,000 copies of the novel are being reprinted. After the shooting began, the women of Megaravalli are returning to their native dress. Even the names of their houses are being changed to the titles described in the novel. director Girish Karnad said The movie Kanooru Heggadathi justice to the novel by Kuvempu in its totality, as it was only an attempt to portray the complexities of women characters in Kuvempu’s work, the voluminous novel could not be depicted in full and the movie was an attempt to show the three different aspects of womanhood in a feudal set-up.
