Joshua Daniel Goodwin (born 24 December, 1949) is a Nova Scotian folk artist well known for his unique sculptures crafted from cherry wood. Born in the suburbs of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Goodwin attended Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School, and upon graduating in 1968, he moved to Canso to become a lobster fisherman. Goodwin wrote a book labled WHY is... in June 1970, depicting his tale of hardship and struggle as a young black child growing up in an abusive household. This book sold over 10 000 copies in Nova Scotia. Soon thereafter, however, he discovered he could become a talented sculptor, so he opened an art gallery in the neighboring town of Pictou, where he met his wife, Jamie Pottie. They have been living happily together now for 33 years. They have four children: John, Sam, Jamal, Shanée, and Maria. Josh was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer on May 14th, 2008. He has been attending regular Chemotherapy sessions, to prevent his cancer from spreading.
