Josephine de Gersdorff

Chevalier Josephine de Gersdorff was born in Manhattan, New York on January 18, 1896 and died in Beverly, Massachusetts on October 15, 1975. Her father was Carl August de Gersdorf (1865-1944), a wealthy New York lawyer, and Helen Suzette Crowninshield (1868-1941).

Josephine de Gersdorff's father, Carl August de Gersdorff was born in Salem, Massachusetts on 10 Jul 1865 and died in Manhattan, New York on January 21, 1944; he was a senior partner in the New York law firm of Cravath, de Gersdorff, Swaine & Wood, now known as Cravath, Swain & Moore; he concentrated on the railroads for the west. He married in 1895 to Helen Suzette Crowninshield who father was Frederic Crowninshield (1845-1918), the first president of the National Society of Mural Painters. The de Gersdorff immigrant to America was Dr. Ernst Bruno von Gersdorff (1820-1883) who came to America from Saxony, Germany and married in 1860 to Caroline Chaote (1834-1889). Ernst father was Baron Heinrich August von Gersdorff (1793-1873) and Augusta Theodora von Tschirschky (?-1883). Josephine's second oldest brother was George Bruno de Gersdorff (1866-1964) who attended MIT was an architect and drew the designs for the Harvard football stadium. He was also in the Alpha Delta Phi Club at Harvard. Josephine was awarded the French Legion of Honor for her work with children during World War II. Her memorial service was held on Monday at noon at Emanuel Church in Back Bay, Boston.
